Local Attractions

Town End Farm is situated in a beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales. There's plenty to see and do in the area no matter what the time of year including a number of stunning walks starting from the farm. Whether you're interested in geology, photography, history, wildlife, family fun or simply wanting a peaceful place to relax, there's something for everyone.

Malham Cove is a natural limestone formation 3 miles north of Town End Farm. A well-known beauty spot, it is a large, curved limestone cliff at the head of a valley, with a fine area of limestone pavement at the top. The waterfall that once cascaded over the cove was higher than Niagara Falls. Today people visit the cove to enjoy the spectacular scenery and see the breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons.

Just North of the Cove is Malham Tarn - a popular Dales' beauty spot set amid rolling hills and rugged moorland. Malham tarm is the highest lake in England and a wetland nature reserve with wildlife viewing hides.

The beautiful waterfall and pool - Janet's Foss - is believed to have got its name from a local, folk tale of a fairy queen that inhabited a cave at the rear of the fall. The pool below the waterfall was once used to wash sheep before shearing in late june. Janet's Foss is a lovely, tranquil spot.

Gordale Scar is a dramatic limestone ravine formed by water from melting glaciers. You can climb the waterfall that flows down the gorge on the dry left hand side with the exception of after heavy rainfall when access is limited but the waterfall becomes even more spectacular.

Mentioned in the Domesday book as 'Malgun', Malham village has been a settlement for at least a thousand years. Malham Show is held annually on August Bank Holiday Saturday. Under the shadow of Malham Cove this traditional agricultural and family country show has been taking place for over 100 years. Taking place over a week in May, Malham Safari attracts many tourists and is a great family day out. The villagers and the local school build sculptures around the village and stalls are put up on the green.

Just 13 miles from the farm lies the picturesque village of Kettlewell. Kettlewell nestles at the feet of Great Whernside, and Buckden Pike and has good examples of both 17th and 18th century houses. In August Kettlewell hosts an annual scarecrow festival where a variety of scarecrows, dressed up as different characters are placed around the village.

Running for 30 years, the Grassington Festival is a two-week long annual event encompassing music, performance and visual arts, held in a variety of venues around the village. For three Saturdays in December Grassington is also host to a Dickensian Festival. During these three Saturdays Grassington is transported back to the time of Charles Dickens. See the Christmas lights, the village square and the streets transformed into a traditional market with shopkeepers, villagers and visitors dressed in Victorian costume.

Kilnsey Show is one of the finest shows of animals in the country. The premier event for hill farmers in the Yorkshire agricultural calender is held every year on the Tuesday after August Bank Holiday against the magnificent backdrop of Kilnsey Crag. The Dales' foremost agricultural show with dry stone walling, produce, handicrafts, horticulture, equestrian events, fell races and harness racing.
